Dear Madeira Community,

As we prepare to depart campus for spring break, we wanted to let everyone know the return-to-campus plan as it relates to COVID.

Negative PCR test required for return to campus after spring break

We will require every student and adult to present a negative COVID-19 PCR test result taken 72 hours or less prior to returning to campus from spring break. Please send your negative test result to prior to your return to campus.

The negative PCR test will be in addition to the full community testing we will conduct the first two weeks after break. In order for our community to transition to mask-optional in mid-April, we need to establish a healthy baseline. Given community members will be traveling over break, we are requiring a negative baseline to return to campus and will then test the community twice in the first two weeks after returning to campus to mitigate potential exposures.

Reminder about phased shift in mitigations

As Ms. Warner noted in her February 25 letter to the community we are shifting to a new stage of the pandemic and our norms, where we will begin to move toward more personal risk assessment and mitigation strategies focused on individual health needs. The phased approach is summarized in the chart below.

We are confident that our community will demonstrate respect and kindness for one another’s personal risk tolerance and well-being, as well as empathy for those whose risk assessment may differ from their own. Anyone who needs to or prefers to wear a mask will be welcome to do so. We are grateful for your continued partnership and wish you a wonderful spring break.
